One in a Million Award recipient: Portage Community: Stronger Together

Where they are multiplying good: Portage, Indiana

How they are multiplying good: They are all One in a Million. When schools and area businesses closed their doors due to COVID-19, local leaders worried about citizens' access to food. Many of our residents found themselves with no income, no ability to purchase food, and no idea of how to get help. City mayor Sue Lynch, township trustee Brendan Clancy, YMCA CEO Shannon Burhans, and schools superintendent Amanda Alaniz formed Portage Community: Stronger Together to meet this increased need for food. The trustee’s office increased its food pantry distribution. Portage Township Schools hosted a weekly meal pick-up in which families took home a week of breakfasts and lunches for their children. The Portage Township YMCA hosted a daily lunch and dinner distribution for children and adults. The group met virtually every week throughout the COVID-19 shutdown to compile resources and advertise them. The combined efforts of these leaders and organizations meant every citizen in Portage Township had access to nutritious food during this difficult time.
