One in a Million Award recipient: Tom Hanley

Where he’s multiplying good: Indianapolis, Indiana

How he’s multiplying good: He is One in a Million. Tom runs a youth-focused health and education nonprofit called Nine13sports. Their organization uses to bicycle to empower youth all across central Indiana through their Kids Riding Bikes, Kids Building Bikes, and ExploreIndy programs. However, their traditional programming was suspended due to COVID-19, because all of it happens with in school during or after the school day.

Facing a very uncertain future for not only himself, but the entire Nine13sports team Tom and his leadership team got to work figuring out how to redirect the organizations assets for the good of the city of Indianapolis as well as for his team. The organization utilizes 3 sprinter vans and 2 different truck and trailer combos for their regular programming, and so the idea was to reach out to the organizations on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis and offer up their team and resources to help wherever they could. Out of that idea Nine13 developed partnerships with Gleaners, Second Helpings, Midwest Food Bank, and American Red Cross to transport food and essential equipment.

Nine13sports now delivers food for Gleaners, Second Helpings, and Midwest Food Banks through their Bulk Food Transport, Quick Response Team, and Individual Family Meal Box Delivery Initiatives. Demand for these services has skyrocketed, so Nine13 has quickly become a key player in getting food to those who need it in Indianapolis. Through these initiatives Nine13 is now delivering between 150,000 - 200,000 pounds of food to over 10,000 individuals every single week.

They are also utilizing their Quick Response Team to make supply runs for the American Red Cross all across the state of Indiana. These runs allow the Red Cross to keep their resources where they are most needed while still receiving the critical supplies like face masks, gloves and protective Plexiglas dividers that allow them to do their work safely and effectively.

Under Tom's leadership this organization went from complete uncertainty to finding a way to plug in and help thousands of their neighbors in need each and every week in Indianapolis and across the state of Indiana. Tom has also vowed to continue with what the Nine13sports team is doing as long as the need still exists. Tom and his team have been a phenomenal example of good acts in their community making Tom a great nominee for this award.
